00 — Why here, why now

What's actually reshaping how you should market in the Inner West right now.

This isn't generic small-business advice with "Inner West" pasted on top. These are the actual forces changing who's moving here, what they're searching for, and what you can use that competitors aren't — the backdrop for every case file below.

01

63,000 new neighbours, on a fixed timeline

The Green Square renewal touching Alexandria, Zetland, Waterloo, Rosebery and Beaconsfield is forecast to bring roughly 63,000 new residents and 33,000 new dwellings — one of the largest urban renewal projects in Australia, backed by $22 billion in private development.

Why it matters: every one of those residents needs a new dentist, physio, furniture supplier and café, and arrives loyal to none of them. The business that shows up in their first search wins a customer for years — this is a closing window, not a standing one.

Two years with no trains — and they're only just coming back

Sydney Metro's Sydenham to Bankstown conversion fully closed the old T3 line through Marrickville and Sydenham in September 2024. As of this audit the line is still closed, with reopening expected in the second half of 2026. A fare-free replacement bus has covered the gap the whole way through.

Why it matters: for two years, Marrickville and Sydenham strip businesses have lost the passing rail commuter who used to walk past the shopfront. Foot traffic built on rail patronage doesn't snap back the day the trains do — a business that built its acquisition around passing commuters needs a plan for the return trip, not just the outage.

A market that Googles before it walks in

Inner West Council's own census data: 43.8% renters, median age 38, and "professional" the single largest occupation group at 41%, on a median personal income of $1,207/week — well above the national median.

Why it matters: this is an educated, well-paid, highly mobile population that moves more often than average and compares options before buying. They aren't walking past the same shop for twenty years out of habit — they're checking three alternatives on their phone before they've finished their coffee.

Seven streets get to stay loud

Enmore Road became the first Special Entertainment Precinct in NSW in 2023; six more followed in 2025 — Balmain, Dulwich Hill, Leichhardt, Rozelle, and both Marrickville North and the Marrickville Town Centre now carry the same status.

Why it matters: businesses inside these precincts get extended trading hours and lighter licensing friction for live music and cultural events — a genuine, underused hook. Almost none of the hospitality and entertainment venues we checked mention it anywhere in their own marketing, let alone their ads.

Generic & free

Search for small-business marketing help in the Inner West and you'll mostly land on general NSW Small Business Commissioner guides — genuinely well-intentioned, built for every small business in the state, not yours specifically.

  • "Working with the media" — pitch your local paper a good-news story
  • "Visual merchandising tips" — window displays and shelf layout
  • Generic, undated, no account-level or Inner West-specific data
Local media & newsletters

Ciao Magazine and Inner West Guide do real, valuable work covering this area — openings, events, community news — and a placement with either is a legitimate way to build goodwill with people already paying attention to the neighbourhood.

  • Real local reach — a fortnightly magazine audience and a Friday newsletter list
  • Built for awareness and goodwill, not for tracking a click to a booking
  • Same ad or mention for everyone who opens it that week — no targeting, no account data
What this audit is

Not advice that could apply to any shop in any state, and not a placement you hope lands. A direct read of your Google Ads, Meta Ads and GA4 accounts, benchmarked against the actual businesses competing against you on this street.

  • Your own accounts, checked line by line
  • Inner West category benchmarks, not national averages
  • A written plan of attack, not a list of tips

01 — By industry

Find your category. Read the case file.

Every finding below is aggregated from real accounts we checked in your industry, in your postcode — not stock statistics. Individual businesses aren't named here; if you want to know who, that's exactly what the audit is for.

Exhibit 1

What each category is modelled to spend on ads each month

Each bar is the combined monthly ad budget we model for every audited business in that category — not a single business's budget, and not observed live spend. Divided across the businesses in each group, it works out to roughly $1.5K–$5K a month per business. Use it to sanity-check your own budget, not as a target.

Combined, the 9 Skin & Beauty clinics we audited are modelled at $13,500–$41,000/month, against $66,000–$165,000/month for the 33 Furniture & Homewares businesses — but per business the range is similar everywhere, at roughly $1.5K–$5K/month. If your own spend sits well outside that, it's worth understanding why.

Exhibit 2

What kind of fight you're actually in

Each bubble is one category. Horizontal: share of independently-owned businesses — the higher it is, the more your competitors are exactly as time-poor as you, not a franchise marketing department. Vertical: share carrying a live, verifiable audit issue — the higher it is, the weaker the competition's actual execution, whatever their budget. Bubble size: combined modelled ad budget for the category.

Dental & Medical sits alone in the wide-open quadrant: mostly independent operators, and most of them executing poorly — genuinely uncontested ground. Trades and Architecture are a fair fight: independent-heavy, but the competition there is already doing the basics right. Hospitality and Skin & Beauty lean chain-heavy with sloppy execution regardless — real marketing budgets, but plenty of room to out-execute them anyway. Furniture & Homewares sits closest to the middle, an even split between independents and chains.

Exhibit 3

The visibility gap: what's broken vs. what's simply not there

Two different failures, by category: a live audit issue (something demonstrably wrong on an account that exists) versus no social presence at all (nothing found to check in the first place). The wider the bars, the more of the category this audit could immediately help.

Food, Hospitality & Specialty Retail carries both the highest issue rate (73%) and one of the highest no-social rates (27%) in the list — the single most exposed category in this audit. Skin & Beauty is the opposite pattern: a high issue rate (56%) but full social coverage, meaning the presence exists, it's just not converting.

Exhibit 4

Search demand isn't flat through the week — most ad accounts are still budgeted like it is

Google Trends search interest, Sydney (NSW), daily for the 30 days to 4 Oct 2026 — Sydney-wide, not Inner West-exclusive, since Google Trends doesn't break out to suburb level at this volume. We're using it as a proxy for weekly intent patterns, which is reasonable for a population this search-driven (see "A market that Googles before it walks in" above). Averaged by day of week across the period.

All three terms bottom out on Saturday — the weakest day of the week, by a wide margin, in every category we checked — while Monday runs hottest for dentist and real estate searches (medical-centre searches peak on Friday, at 57.5). Real estate searches swing from 78.8 (Monday) to 50.2 (Saturday); dentist searches swing from 69.5 (Monday) to 13.6 (Saturday). If your campaigns are running an even daily budget rather than dayparted to where intent actually sits, Saturday is very likely where the wasted spend is hiding.

02 — Method

Four checks. No guessing.

This is the same process behind every case file above, and it's what runs on your accounts if you book the audit.

01

Google Ads Transparency Center

Every advertiser account pointing at your domain, live — including ones running under an old business name, a personal name, or a past agency you may have forgotten about.

02

Meta Ad Library

What's actually active on Facebook and Instagram right now, cross-checked against what your own website links to (or doesn't).

03

Website & tracking health

Title tags, page speed signals, mobile behaviour, broken elements, and whether your conversion tracking (GA4, pixels) is actually firing — or quietly broken.

04

Category benchmark

How you compare to other Inner West businesses in your category — not a generic industry average pulled from a US report.

03 — The offer

Start with a read-only audit. Go ongoing only if it's worth it.

The Audit and Audit + Session never touch your accounts — read-only, revocable the moment we're done. The Retainer is the only tier that manages anything, and even then nothing goes live without sign-off. See "what you provide" below.

01 — Connect

You grant access. Read-only for The Audit — manager-level only if you go ahead with The Retainer.

02 — Monitor

AI agents watch Google Ads, Meta Ads & GA4 around the clock — not once a month at a review meeting.

03 — Recommend

Every change is drafted with a before/after and the reasoning — reviewed against 15+ years of agency-level judgement.

04 — You approve

Routine fixes move fast. Anything structural or budget-level comes to you directly — nothing executes unsupervised.

  • Reviewed against the standards of a strategist with 15+ years running paid media at agency level
  • Cancel anytime — no contract
Eligibility: min. $1,000/month ad spend (current or committed), and we're capping intake at 10 new businesses this month so every account gets real attention.
Ask about The Retainer

Not sure which one? Start with The Audit — that's what most people do, and nothing about it commits you to anything further.

What you provide: for The Audit and Audit + Session, a viewer/read-only invite on your Google Ads account, partner (view) access in Meta Business Manager, and a viewer role on GA4 — the same level of access you'd give any consultant reviewing your accounts, never a login or password. For The Retainer, manager-level access is needed to action anything — but nothing is changed, paused or touched without it being reviewed first, and anything structural or budget-affecting comes to you directly for approval before it goes live. We'll show you real example recommendations before you commit to anything.
